The iPhone 16 series is already one of the most anticipated phones of 2024, despite the iPhone 15 series having just been released for around seven months. The iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max are said to be the four versions in the range. According to early rumors, the tech giant located in Cupertino, California, is hard at work developing an A18 Pro processor with a primary focus on artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for the next generation of iPhones. For the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, Apple utilized an older A16 chip; for the Pro variants, they used an entirely new A17 Pro chip.

Apple’s A18 Pro Leaked Benchmark Score Hints at Vastly Improved Single-Core Performance

In his research note, Haitong International Tech Research’s Jeff Pu provided information regarding the A18 Pro CPU, as 9to5Mac noted. The expert claims that Apple is preparing to modify the A18 Pro processor to enable on-device AI. The chip manufacturer is increasing output sooner than normal.

Our supply chain inspections indicate that while Apple’s A17 Pro volume has stabilized since February, we are witnessing an increase in demand for the A18. We observe that the 6-GPU variant of Apple’s A18 Pro will have a bigger die area (than the A17 Pro), which may indicate a trend toward edge AI computing, Pu noted in his email. The device will be able to hold more transistors and specialized parts thanks to the increased die area. This would pave the way for the iPhone 16 Pro series to have further on-device AI capabilities.

AI-Powered iOS 18 Could Be the Biggest Update in Apple’s History: Report

It is believed that a chip’s die area increases the likelihood of problems and design errors. It could also have an impact on heat dissipation and energy efficiency.

According to reports, Apple plans to release its AI features this year in two phases. It may operate some AI functions entirely on the device and rely on cloud infrastructure in collaboration with Google for other aspects.

With significant updates and revisions, the iPhone 16 series is anticipated to launch in the second part of this year. The A18 SoC is anticipated to be included in the basic iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, however the A18 Pro chip may be included in the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max. With 3,500 points in the single-core test and 8,200 points in the multi-core test, the A18 Pro was recently discovered on Geekbench 6.
